In the Garage, I Feel Safe. No One Cares About My Ways
Friday, January 31 through February 28, 2025
The Cal Poly University Art Gallery is proud to present the work of James Edmondson in his show, "In the Garage, I Feel Safe. No One Cares About My Ways,” from Friday, January 31 through February 28, 2025. The show opens on January 31, starting with a talk by Edmondson in Baker Science Rm. 180-101 from 5:00 – 6:00 PM, followed by a reception in the gallery from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. Edmondson will also be teaching a poster design workshop for Art and Design students on Friday, January 31 from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM in Dexter 34-149.
James Edmondson is a type designer based in Oakland, California. In 2015, he started OH no Type Co., an independent font foundry that creates bespoke and retail typefaces. With a background in lettering, and a deep appreciation for lively typefaces that are uniquely beautiful, and fun to read, Edmondson’s goal has always been to create quality work that highlights underappreciated genres. He respects history without reinventing the wheel—organic over geometric, lively over perfect, and good spacing above all else.
Edmondson grew up in Arroyo Grande and studied graphic design at California College of the Arts. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Art Type Media program in the Netherlands. In 2018, Edmondson co-founded Future Fonts, a platform for distributing fonts in-progress. He teaches type design in the Extended Program at Type West and occasional workshops through Type@Cooper. His fonts are available through Adobe Fonts and OH No Type Company.
According to Art and Design faculty member, Charmaine Martinez, James Edmondson has plenty of fans among her graphic design students: “Each year in my Typography II course, I have students research a contemporary typeface designer. Students are consistently drawn to James Edmonson and his distinct and stylish typefaces. Using OH no typefaces can elevate any design project, and as people will see in the exhibition, typeface design blends incredible artistry with complex and continually evolving technical requirements. James is one of the most influential type designers working today, and we are thrilled to share his work with the larger campus and local community.”
